U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- An Air Force Academy cadet helps unveil the service core values during a ceremony here Sept. 29. The core values replaced the poetic reference "Bring me men ..." after Air Force leaders decided the words were out of step with the current culture, as well as offensive to many people. Secretary of the Air Force Dr. James G. Roche and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. Jumper attended the unveiling.

World War II had been over for two years and the Korean War lay three years ahead when the Air Force ended a 40-year association with the U.S. Army to become a separate service. The Department of the Air Force was created when President Harry S Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947.
