Description:
This September, 1947 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a number of men who were in the process of cutting lumber inside what was a Salus, West Virginia woodshop. The lumber being processed was to be used to construct wooden boxes. Of note, is the fact that the cutting saws were outfitted with what appeared to be safety guards, however, the carpenters themselves were ill equipped, lacking safety goggles, and a filterized breathing apparatus. Whether or not the power saws were equipped with an emergency cut-off switch could not be determined from this photograph. In gaining a better understanding of workplace hazards, through hands-on and on-site information acquisition, protocol-formulating bodies such as NIOSH, are better able to create a safer workplace through substantiation of appropriate safety regulations.
