From approximately 1940, this historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupatio
Description:
From approximately 1940, this historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The worker depicted here, was stationed at a small hooded grinding machine that had been equipped with an exhaust ventilator. The need for a ventilated system was paramount when providing a safe, non-contaiminated workspace, keeping potentially harmful airborne particulates at a minimum. In the 1940s, the Industrial Hygiene Division (IHD) investigated hazards associated with this, and other activities associated with harardous workplace scenarios. The potential health problems associated with industrial metal grinding include respiratory and dermatologic hazards from inhalation and contact with not only metallic particulates, but fungi- and bacteria-contaminated synthetic metal-working fluids in the form of oil mists.
