Description:
This historical image was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Published in the 'Public Health Bulletin' No. 234, in an article entitled, "A Study of Chronic Mercurialism in the Hatters' Fur Cutting Industry", Figure 5, 1937, this image depicted three men in a Connecticut fur processing plant, as they were 'carroting' rabbit pelts. Carroting is the process of treating 'hatters'' fur with mercury nitrate, thereby, rendering the fur suitable for manufacturing hats. Note that the worker in the foreground was wearing gloves, however, from this image it cannot be determined whether or not the other two men were wearing gloves, which when working with animal skins, is now required. None of the workers were using filtered breathing masks, or eye protection.
