Description:
This historical image was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Depicted, was a page from a 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 263, Fig. 1, 1941, which illustrated in the form of a flow chart, the step-by-step activities involved in the manufacture of hats using animal furs. It did not include the aspect of fur processing involving the potentially toxic chemical mercury nitrate, which rendered the fur suitable for manufacturing hats. If precautions were not taken, such as wearing a filtered breathing mask, or gloves, mercury exposure was quite likely, and could have lead to heavy metal poisoning, with severe pathologic neurological consequences.
