Description:
From approximately 1940, this historical photograph, which had been photo-retouched prior to printing, was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and depicted a worker grinding metal on a machine equipped with a Roto-Clone ventilation device. This Louisville, Kentucky facility was part of the American Air Filter Company. In the 1940s and 1950s, the Industrial Hygiene Division (IHD) investigated hazards associated with activities such as metal grinding. It was in scenarios such as this where there existed the potential for worker health problems associated with industrial metal grinding, including respiratory and dermatologic hazards from inhalation and contact with fungi- and bacteria-contaminated synthetic metal-working fluids, oil mists, and grinding dust in the machining areas.
