From 1952, this illustrative panel, depicting two historical drawings, was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Figure 2, at the top, diagramed the Illinois-Indiana modification of the old Mine Safety Appliances (M.S.A.) Electrostatic Precipitator. While Figure 3, at bottom, revealed the diagrammatic details of the unit's power supply circuit. These electrical wiring diagrams were examples of the type of measures taken in order to improve the operation of electrostatic precipitators, which are devices that clean unburned airborne particles resulting from industrial burning processes such as coal-fired power plant operations. In the 1940s and 1950s, the Industrial Hygiene Division (IHD) investigated hazards associated with many types of manufacturing activities. This manufacturing design is an example of a measure meant to improve workplace safety.
