This 2001 image depicted a man's hand he'd placed in a stream of running water pouring from an automatically activated faucet. The water flow had been activated by a built-in motion detector so that the user only had to place his hands beneath the faucet. No pressing, turning, pushing, or twisting was required. Such a mechanism is particularly useful for those with limited reach or grasp, or for those to whom hygiene is important. The downside of such a device involves the lack of a way one can control the magnitude of the flow rate, or temperature, as well as the absence of universal directives that would guide an uninitiated user as to how to use the mechanism.
