Magnified only 25x, this scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted the morphologic characteristics associated with an unidentified millipede's segmented body wall, at which point its jointed legs attached to the insect's exoskeleton. Millipedes are members of the insect Phylum Arthropoda, and the Class Diplopoda.Though the name 'millipede' means '1000 legs', these insects possess far fewer legs, which number more in the realm of 100 to 300, or 50 to 150 pairs. The reason there are two pairs of legs per segment is due to the fact that each uniquely morphologic segment is actually comprised of two fused segments, and are termed 'diplosegments'. The first 3 body segments actually comprise the thorax, whereupon, the first segment possesses no legs, and the 2nd and 3rd segments only possess 1 pair of legs.
