Description:
This historic image, published in the November, 1947 issue of 'Industrial Hygiene Newsletter', was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and depicted two technicians performing a radiophotograph of a boiler weld, using a 400 kV X-ray, and large radiographic plates. Even today, radiographic analyses are still performed in order to reveal the presence of stress fractures in dense materials such as metals and concrete. In this particular image the scenario showed one technician operating the controls, and the other, dressed in a business suite, who might have been an industrial hygienist, taking readings on contaminating radiation escaping from the test site.
