Emperor Akihito, Emperor of Japan, lays a chrysanthemum wreath at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific July 15 at Punchbowl Crater, Hawaii. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko paid tribute to those interred at the cemetery in a ceremony attended by Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, Navy Adm. Timothy Keating, U.S. Pacific Command commander and Pacific Air Forces Commander Gen. Howie Chandler. More than 50,000 service men and women are interred at the cemetery, roughly 13,000 who died in World War II.
