Airmen, Soldiers fight

Description:

Airmen and Soldiers go through stretching exercises before entering a hand-to-hand combat tournament Feb. 14 at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea. This training is part of the Army warrior ethos. The training is now offered to Airmen here to enhance mission effectiveness between the two services. Air Force officials are currently working on a service specific hand-to-hand combat training for all Airmen. Currently, the Air Force's Officer Training School has implemented a new close-combat course into its curriculum.

World War II had been over for two years and the Korean War lay three years ahead when the Air Force ended a 40-year association with the U.S. Army to become a separate service. The Department of the Air Force was created when President Harry S Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947.
