Solar power ground breaking ceremony

Description:

Officials from the Air Force, industry and the state of Nevada attended a groundbreaking ceremony at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., April 23 to mark the start of construction of what will be the largest solar photovoltaic power system in North America. The power plant, scheduled for completion in early 2008 will produce approximately 15 megawatts of power and provide more than 25 percent of the electricity demand on the base. Among those attending the ceremony were (from left) Tom Werner, SunPower Corporation chief executive officer; Pat Shalmy, Nevada Power Company president; William Anderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and logistics; Col. Michael Bartley, 99th Air Base Wing commander; Jim Gibbons, governor of Nevada; and Matt Cheney, MMA Renewable Ventures CEO.
