This historic 1928 diagram, which had been digitally enhanced and colorized, depicted examples of common pump and well defects, which included covers level with, or below ground surface, inadequate drainage around the top of the pump or well, cracked tiles or concrete located around the casing, and a casing top that was level with the bottom of the pit, thereby, preventing runoff drainage away from the water supply.
