Description:
This historical photograph, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted the inside of the 'U.S. Smelting, Refining, & Mining Co.' mine shaft in Utah. Located at the bottom of the British Shaft A. (Intake Side), in the main ventilation shaft, No. 3 (U.S. Section), where towards the right, a 50 HP Joy Axivane exhaust fan was situated. Note the grid covering the fan's intake portal. This fan had a 35,000 cfm flow-through capacity. In the close confines of a subterranean mine such as this one, it's critically important that proper air quality be maintained.
