Description:
This historical 1953 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Depicted here, were the 'rinse' and 'pickling' tanks, into which wheel rims were dipped before being brass plated at a Firestone Steel Products Division industrial plant. In the steel pickling, or acid pickling process, acids such as hydrochloric, or sulfuric acids are used to remove any oxidization, i.e., rust, which forms on the steel's surface during its manufacturing process. Note the overhead ventilation units above each chemical vat, which were extracting noxious fumes emitted during the soaking process, Also note that the workers were wearing no protective breathing devices, nor were they wearing goggles. This image was published in the September, 1950, issue of the 'Industrial Hygiene Newsletter'.
