Description:
Depicted in this historic image was the interior of the Blood Chemistry room in the Carville, Louisiana Leprosarium's infirmary, where blood samples that had been drawn from hospital patients, were tested for various reasons. This staff Sister was in the process of conducting one of the requisite tests that had been ordered by a physician. The "Sisters' of Charity" were members of the leprosarium staff, and until recently, there were 21 Sisters on staff. The first group of four Sisters of the order founded by St. Vincent de Paul, and officially named Daughters of Charity, arrived at Carville, April 27, 1896, with Sister Beatrice Hart in charge. The sisters volunteered their services, in order to nurse the sufferers of leprosy who'd sought help at the leprosarium.
