Description:
This image depicted World Health Organization (WHO) epidemiologist Dr. Ali Mourad, examining a young man's arms, for signs of smallpox, which leaves scars on its sufferers, the severity of which is directly proportional to the severity of the disease, and the patient's age. However, the younger the patient, the more likely he'll be to loose such scars as he ages.In 1968, the WHO, and other world public health organizations - led by the United States and the then-Soviet Union - came together to join in the fight to eradicate smallpox from the world. The worldwide eradication of this dreaded virus was due to this Smallpox Eradication Campaign, whereupon, a mass-vaccination program was instituted across the globe that lead to the declaration in 1978 by a global commission that smallpox had been eradicated, which was officially accepted by the 33rd World Health Assembly in 1980. Smallpox is a serious, contagious, and sometimes fatal infectious disease.
