The global STOP Transmission of Polio (STOP) initiative to eradicate polio is the largest public health initiative in history. Team members are recruited and trained primarily by the Centers for Disease Control, and once on assignment, are under the supervision of either WHO, or UNICEF. Established in the fall of 1998 by the World Health Assembly, the organization's primary goal was, and is, to eradicate polio, while strengthening society's public health capacity to control other major childhood diseases.This photograph of a district health office in India, was captured during a STOP assignment that had taken place between January and April, 2000. Chris Zahniser, B.S.N., R.N., M.P.H., the team member and photographer, was assigned to the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, and spent three months working in the Districts of Gorakhpur and Deoria.
