This was a typical village home that was being visited by an elderly volunteer smallpox eradication team member. He'd been greeted by a group of children about to be questioned, and educated by the volunteer about the signs and symptoms of smallpox. Such volunteers would discuss the 'smallpox card' image showing a smallpox case example, with village residents, which included adults and children. The 'smallpox card' not only presented an example of the disease, but it described the reward associated with ones discovery of a smallpox case, and asked if one knew of any such cases. During these country wide searches for smallpox, each one of the 12 million homes had to be visited, in order to show residents the smallpox case photograph, as well as ask pertinent, investigative questions.
