Description:
This computer-generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC's lead avatar in the virtual world of Second Life. This was the forth design stage of the avatar. Customizing an avatar's appearance is a key aspect to community acceptance. In preparation for the first CDC Health Fair, which took place inside Second Life in October, 2006, the avatar was outfitted with a more corporate design for clothing, more realistic facial features and hair, as well as a CDC badge, in order to more fully simulate a trade show booth attendant, and to reinforce the link to the CDC's brand identity. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning 'lover of health', to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space.
