This computer-generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC's lead avatar in the virtual world of Second Life. This is the first design-stage of the avatar. She was metaphorically 'born' on July 13, 2006, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of CDC. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning 'lover of health', to be the modern muse of health to serve as lead health spokesperson, and health educator in this new virtual space.
