This computer-generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC's lead avatar in the virtual world of Second Life. This was the third design stage of the avatar. Customizing an avatar's appearance is a key aspect to community acceptance. This image shows both a more corporate look to the avatar, as well as a real world image of the CDC's marquee, while placing them into the virtual context in this visual experiment. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning 'lover of health', to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space.
