Magnified 58x, this scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depict some of the morphologic details found associated with the wing attachment of an unidentified dragonfly, found deceased on the grounds of the Decatur, Georgia suburbs.All dragonflies are divided into two main groups: the Anisoptera, or 'true' dragonflies that when in flight maintain a 'cross-like' shape with their outstretched wings, and the Zygoptera, or 'damselflies' who when in flight, position their wings above their bodies. The thorax is the body segment to which the wings are attached, and which is subdivided into the anterior 'prothorax' that attaches the head, and from which emanates the first pair of legs, and the 'pterothorax' which houses the flight muscles, attaches the wings, and two remaining pairs of legs.
