Description:
Included in this scanning electron micrographic (SEM) view, magnified 55x, were aspects of the eye, antenna, and jointed leg of an unidentified dragonfly that had been found deceased on the grounds of the Decatur, Georgia suburbs. Note what appears to be the 'hollowed-out' antenna, the distal end of which had been broken off. When it was alive, this now empty lumen would have been filled with the dragonfly's blood, which is known as hemolymph, as well as soft tissues including nerves and muscles that had dried up after the organism's demise.
