Description:
This historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It depicted a female industrial worker, who was dying the edge of a shoe by hand, in a Maine factory. The woman was not wearing gloves, nor was she wearing a filtered breathing mask, however, she was working next to a ventilated workstation, equipped with an overhead hood. The toxicity of the chemical fumes, emitted from the dye, could not be determined from this photograph, therefore, whether or not the workplace interior was ventilated, or if ventilation was even needed, is not known. See PHIL 9630 for another view of this scenario.
