Description:
These Bangladesh residents, who were also local eradication team volunteers, were walking along a trail, going from house to house in search of any possible smallpox cases, or residents who knew of the existence of any potential cases. Once a case was discovered, and was confirmed by an on-site eradication team epidemiologist, the name was entered into the 'Containment Book'. The Containment Book was a ledger, which recorded all of the names of anyone living in, or within one half of a mile from a smallpox case, and subsequently all those listed were vaccinated against smallpox. Those vaccinated were followed until a 'successful' vaccination was observed. Periodic surveys showed that by the end of the program, 80% of the public knew about the cash award presented to those who had informed the public health authorities of a confirmed smallpox case.
