Description:
This 1975 photograph depicted a community smallpox eradication team volunteer as he was questioning members of a market crowd about the possible presence of smallpox cases in their community. If, indeed, a case was reported, from no matter the source, it was investigated fully, and if confirmed as a smallpox case, a reward was paid to the informant, no matter the age, and it was subsequently entered into the 'Containment Book'. The Containment Book was a ledger, which recorded all of the names of anyone living in, or within one half of a mile from a smallpox case, and subsequently all those listed were vaccinated against smallpox. Those vaccinated were followed until a 'successful' vaccination was observed. Periodic surveys showed that by the end of the program, 80% of the public knew about the cash award presented to those who had informed the public health authorities of a confirmed smallpox case.
