Description:
Searching house to house in his quest to find any remaining smallpox cases, this elderly community volunteer smallpox eradication team member was querying the occupants of this residence. If, indeed, a case was reported, from no matter the source, it was investigated fully, and if confirmed as a smallpox case, a reward was paid to the informant, no matter the age, and it was entered into the 'Containment Book'. The Containment Book was a ledger, which recorded all of the names of anyone living in, or within one half a mile from a smallpox case, and subsequently all those listed were vaccinated against smallpox. Those vaccinated were followed until a 'successful' vaccination was observed.
