Title:
This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted a region of the exoskeletal surface of an unidentified white moth, which was found deceased
Description:
This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted a region of the exoskeletal surface of an unidentified white moth, which was found deceased on the ground in Decatur, Georgia. Under this low magnification of only 43X, you'll note the presence of numerous 'scales', which are actually outcroppings of the surface, and are composed of the same material, a durable substance known as 'chitin'. Notice how the length of the scales increases as their location changes moving out towards the periphery of this region. Also visible were numerous 'hair-like' structures known as 'setae', which are sensorial in nature, and are not hair in the mammalian sense, but like the scales, are composed of chitin.
