Description:
In this 1994 image, a wheelchair-seated man was poised in front of a raised hearth-type fireplace, as he was operating the fireplace controls. Raising the hearth above ground level minimized the need for bending over and stooping, thereby, facilitating use by those with balance limitations, back problems, a short stature, or seated in mobility devices such as the man pictured here. The Center for Universal Design (CUD) is a national research, information, and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops, and promotes accessible and universal design in housing, buildings, outdoor and urban environments and related products. The Center's work manifests the belief that all new environments and products, to the greatest extent possible, should be usable by everyone regardless of their age, ability, or circumstance.
