Published in the 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 262, 1941, this historic image, which was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) depicted a battery factory in which respirator-wearing workers were in the process of fusing the lead-acid battery assembly into a stable, self-contained unit using a blowtorch. Note the inclusion of an exhaust system situated in close proximity to the action at hand. As a device containing both lead, a toxic heavy metal, and acid, in the form of sulfuric acid, batteries are potentially dangerous, both in their finished state, as well as during their manufacture. Precautions need be taken when building a battery, including the use of goggles, gloves, and filtered breathing devices. These workers were wearing the requisite filtered mask and gloves, but no goggles, which would have prevented accidental eye exposure to splashing fluids.
