Description:
AML Glass Buttes area, G5, Burns District View from the hill above the G5 mill/retort looking toward a power pole that helped supply electricity for a mercury retort between 1967-1970. In the foreground is a dozer tread used as a conveyor belt and maybe as a sorting table for ore before additional crushing to form a powder. The heaviest, mercury-bearing part of the powder was then separated from lighter powder and the lighter powder was piped as a water slurry to the dry pond areas in the distance. Water to form the slurry was pumped from a groundwater well and piped about 1/2 mile to the retort area. The heavier powder was heated in metal tubes wrapped with copper wire to drive off the mercury as a gas. The gas was channeled to condensers where it cooled and the mercury in the gas formed droplets that could be collected into flasks.
