Migrating Longspur
Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, Iowa March 29, 2012 Credit: Paul Roisen/USFWS Smith's Longspurs have begun migrating through Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in central Iowa. Wildlife Biologist Karen Viste-Sparkman observed 30 of them on March 29, 2012. In previous years, they have been seen on the refuge during the first three weeks of April. These birds nest in the tundra and winter in the southcentral United States. Most of the population passes through the Midwest region during migration, but they are easily overlooked. Smith's Longspurs spend most of their time on the ground, where their muted colors blend with the soil and dead vegetation. During migration they prefer short, sparse vegetation and at Neal Smith Refuge use burned areas of the tallgrass prairie. This is just one species of grassland bird that uses tallgrass prairie habitat on the refuge.
