Countdown to CoP16: CITES was first agreed on March 3, 1973 at a meeting of representatives from 80 countries held in Washington, D.C. Today, the treaty is implemented by 177 member nations--referred to as Parties-- making it a truly global, cooperative effort to regulate wildlife trade.
