Elwood served in the U.S. Navy from December 1991 to December 2011 and retired at the rank of Commander. Commissioned through the Navy ROTC Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Lee was accepted to Naval Flight Officer Training in Pensacola, FL. and received his Naval Flight Officer Wings in 1993. After attending Electronic Warfare School and additional flight training in the EA-6B Prowler, Lee was assigned to VAQ-140 and completed two deployments aboard the USS George Washington flying combat missions in support of Operations Joint Endeavor in Bosnia and Southern Watch in southern Iraq. After his initial tour, Lee completed tours as a flight instructor in Pensacola, FL. and another EA-6B Prowler tour in support of Operations Northern and Southern Watch flying out of air bases in Incirlik, Turkey, and Prince Sultan, Saudi Arabia. .
In 2002, Lee transitioned to the Full Time Reserves and served as the Reserve Program Director at the Naval Air Reserve in Atlanta, Commanding Officer of the Navy Operational Support Center in Greenville, South Carolina, and as the Executive Officer at the Navy Operational Support Center in Atlanta, supporting the mobilization readiness of Navy Reservists for the Global War on Terror. Lee also qualified as co-pilot in the UC-12B flying military airlift missions in the southeast U.S..
Following military retirement from January to June 2012, Lee worked as a Project Manager at the Georgia Tech Research Institute in the Electronic Systems Lab and was assigned to the Joint Precision Approach and Landing System software project. In July 2012, Lee joined the Fish and Wildlife Service as the Branch Chief for the Budget and Financial Management Branch in the Division of Budget, Planning and Financial Systems..
Lee has earned several awards during his military career to include the Meritorious Service Medal, three Air Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, one Navy Achievement Medal, and various other campaign and unit awards. Lee is married to his wife Janet of 20 years and has two children; Scarlett who is 19 and James who is 17. They reside in Newnan, Georgia.
