Early House of Representatives Chamber (artist representation)
On June 20, 1801, the Congress signed a $4,789 contract to build a temporary chamber (at left in photo) for the House of Representatives Chamber - due to its poor construction and ventilation it was nicknamed 'the oven.'
While the north wing of the Capitol housing the Senate had been constructed (at right in photo), the temporary chamber within that wing would no longer be large enough following the additional new members that would follow the 1800 census.
