Description:
DC Central Kitchen Fleet Coordinator/Transportation Driver Anthony Turner adjusts the load of potatoes in one of the kitchenâs trucks. Agriculture Under Secretary Farm and Foreign Agriculture Service (FFAS) Michael Scuse (left) donated 1,000 pounds of potatoes to DC Central Kitchen, in participation with the Feds Feed Families Food Drive, on Monday August 20, 2012 in front of the Agriculture headquarters in Washington, D.C. FFAS Deputy Under Secretary Karis Gutter (right) helped with the transfer of 20 50-pound bags. Under Secretary Scuse, a farmer himself purchased and loaded his pick-up this weekend with half a ton of potatoes at nearby Wicks farm, in Delaware. Secretary Scuse farms 1,700 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat. He says that this is the first of many more donations this year. When asked when the potatoes will get to peopleâs mouths, he replied, âCouple hours. Once I get it to the kitchen, they have volunteers there, we work off volunteers, (and) if it wasnât for the volunteers we would not run. Once I get it back, the volunteers will cut it up, shave them, dice or whatever they are going to do, they are going to put it into soup, or something; they (the recipients) will get it by tonight.â USDA Photo by Lance Cheung.
