Title:
May 2012, Trying not to disturb contaminated sediment
Description:
As the diver collects sediment core samples it's hard not to disturb the bottom 'mud' which causes oil sheens to appear. Coal tar from the Former Synergy Manufactured Gas Plant has migrated from contaminated soil and groundwater into the Sugar River. The yellow rope you see is a Comm line or communications rope. In these conditions, you would want to be attached to that rope... As the river not only has a current, but there is also a dam overflow just below the site. A third person (not pictured) known as the dive master, is talking to the diver via the comm rope and taking notes as the diver describes the river bottom and takes samples. The tender is responsible for the safety of the diver.
