Title:
'After' and to this day (when sunny)
Description:
The river banks were restored and replanted with native species of wetlands grasses. In addition to the contaminated sediment that had been removed, EPA also removed invasive species that had taken over the shorelines. Each year, EPA's cleanup contractors sample the river sediment and shoreline areas to monitor potential recontamination from the tidal activity in the harbor. While from time to time we see recontamination in the subtidal zone, the shoreline areas remain successfully clean. While significant work remains in the harbor further south from where this photo was taken, this area is an encouraging place to see how the river can be successfully restored. More and more each year this area is becoming a favorite spot for increasing numbers of birds, fish and other wildlife that some of us can't help but count each time we stop by.
