Title:
July 26, 2012 Tough, but expected visibility for Elwha River Study
Description:
The freshwater silt plume being released from the Elwha River now that the dams are coming down casts a 'cloud' over areas near the river mouth. As the current changes direction in the Strait, the 'cloud' moves back and forth to various areas, limiting light penetration to the bottom. The measurement tape, shown here is called a 'transect' and is used to ensure that the permanent monitoring stations are surveyed consistently. Divers surveyed from 10 to 40 meters on the transect at a one meter width on either side. This ensures that results are compared year to year from the same area, to give statistically representative data on any changes that may occur as a result of the dam removal. Photo of Nancy Elder, USGS, reeling in her transect tape after completing an invertebrate count at a survey station. See more photos and ask questions of EPA Divers at www.facebook.com/EPAdivers
