A HOT CORROSION EXPERIMENT BEING CONDUCTED AT GENERAL ELECTRIC'S R&D CENTER. A NEWER METHOD OF COMMERCIALLY GENERATING ELECTRICITY IS BEING DEVELOPED BY GENERAL ELECTRIC. FUEL CELLS, BATTERY-LIKE GENERATORS, PRODUCE ELECTRICITY BY AN ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTION. UNLIKE THE BATTERY, THE FUEL CELL HAS A CONSTANT SOURCE OF FUEL. IN THIS PROGRAM, G.E. IS PLANNING TO USE GASIFIED COAL TO POWER THE CELLS. THIS HYDROGEN-RICH FUEL IS FED INTO ONE SIDE OF THE CELL WHILE OXYGEN IS FED INTO THE OTHER. THIS CREATES A NEGATIVE CHARGE AT THE HYDROGEN (ANODE) SIDE AND A POSITIVE CHARGE AT THE OXYGEN (CATHODE) SIDE. THE ATTRACTION OF THESE CHARGES CAUSES THE ELECTRONS TO FLOW THROUGH THE MOLTEN CARBONATE ELECTROLYTE. THIS MOVEMENT OF THE ELECTRONS CREATES THE ELECTRICITY. BECAUSE THE MOLTEN CARBONATE FUEL CELL HAS A HIGH OPERATING TEMPERATURE, IT CREATES EXCESS HEAT WHICH CAN BE USED TO POWER OTHER ELECTRIC GENERATORS.
