Title:
Corps contractor tags one of 6,785 total plants
Description:
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor tags one of the 3,696 plants, comprised of 14 native species, being planted and cared for during the final phase of river-bank erosion repairs along the American River’s south bank in Sacramento, Calif., Jan. 4, 2012. A total of 6,785 plants at two erosion sites within one-half mile of each other will be nourished for at least three years by a river-water irrigation system, while a waist-high fence will guard against beavers and other animal populations until the plants can sustain themselves. The plants were placed more than 15 feet away from the levee to comply with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety standards for vegetation on levees, improving river habitat without compromising levee stability. It’s all part of the Sacramento River Bank Protection Project, a joint effort between the Corps’ Sacramento District and Central Valley Flood Protection Board to reduce flood risk by maintaining levees and reducing stream bank erosion along the Sacramento River and its tributaries.
