Metrolina Greenhouses is a family-owned, wholesale plant and services company that started business in April 1972. It is the largest single-site heated greenhouse in the US at 162 acres under roof and approximately 30 acres of outdoor growing space. Metrolina Greenhouses is one of the most automated greenhouses in the U.S. and has many internally designed machines from automatic plant transplanters to mechanical shipping belts. The Metrolina greenhouses operation has drastically cut its energy bills by replacing a natural gas heating system with a wood boiler, funded in part with U.S. Department of Agricultureâs (USDA) Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The wood chips used to fuel the Vyncke boiler also provide an additional market for local lumber mills and logging operations. Metrolina produced 187 billion BTUs from the biomass boilers between October 1, 2011 and May 30, 2012. USDA photo by Robin Hampton.
