BLIND SHAFT BORER IN THE 47-FOOT DEEP COLLAR (LEFT) AND THE GALLOWAY (RIGHT). THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY'S BLIND SHAFT BORER CONTRACT CALLS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT, MANUFACTURE, AND DEMONSTRATION OF A MACHINE CAPABLE OF VERTICAL DOWNWARD PENETRATION THROUGH ROCK. THIS MACHINE WILL BE USED TO CONSTRUCT THE OAK GROVE NO. 4 INTAKE SHAFT NEAR BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA. WHEN COMPLETED, THIS SHAFT WILL BE 1160 FT. DEEP. THE BLIND SHAFT BORERIS A NEW CONCEPT FOR BORING VERTICAL COAL MINE SHAFTS. THE BORER MACHINE IS UNIQUE AS IT IS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS TYPE AND SIZE IN THE WORLD, AND IS EXPECTED TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE TIME REQUIRED TO DEVELOP NEW COAL MINES. THE MACHINE IS OVER 24 FEET IN DIAMETER, NEARLY 60 FEET HIGH, WEIGHS 350 TONS, AND CAN BORE 40 FEET PER 24-HOUR DAY. THE TOTAL SYSTEM INCORPORATES CONVENTIONAL HOISTING AND CONCRETE LIN- ING EQUIPMENT. THE INITIAL FIELD TRIAL IS AT U.S. STEEL'S OAK GROVE MINE.
