A new 70-foot-long pedestrian bridge over Napa Creek in Napa, Calif., installed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers April 9 awaits its final touches before being opened to the public. The bridge replaced an old vehicle bridge that was too low and often blocked debris when the creek rose, causing flooding into neighboring homes and businesses. Installing the bridge was the last major phase of a $14.8 million flood risk reduction and habitat restoration project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project is a joint effort by the Corps, the city of Napa and the Napa Flood Control and Water Conservation District, and is scheduled to finish in May.
