OVERALL VIEW OF THE PFB PLANT. THE FLUIDIZED-BED BOILER SUSPENDS CRUSHED COAL AND LIME- STONE ON AN UPWARD-BLOWING CUSHION OF AIR. THE MIXTURE TAKES ON MANY OF THE PROPERTIES OF A TURBULENT LIQUID- HENCE THE NAME 'FLUIDIZED-BED'. AT THE COMBUSTION TEMPERA- TURES OF 1500-1600 DEGREES F., THE LIMESTONE CHEMICALLY ABSORBS THE SULFUR RELEASED FROM THE COAL, PREVENTING IT FROM BEING RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. THE PRODUCT IS CALCIUM SULFATE, A DRY, INERT SUBSTANCE DISCHARGED WITH THE ASH. IN THE 'PRESSURIZED FLUIDIZED BED' CONCEPT, THE COM- BUSTOR IS PRESSURIZED TO 6-16 TIMES ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE. THE HEATED, HIGH PRESSURE GASES WOULD HAVE ENOUGH ENERGY FIRST TO SPIN A GAS TURBINE DIRECTLY, THEN TO PRODUCE STEAM THAT WOULD RUN A FOLLOW-ON STEAM TURBINE.
