STOCKTON, Calif. (May 1, 2011) â Corps water safety mascot Seamoor the sea serpent explains the importance of life jackets at the first-ever Stockton Steelhead Festival here May 1. New Hogan Dam, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, helps reduce Stocktonâs flood risk and impounds the Calaveras River, Stocktonâs main water supply. New Hogan Lake park rangers brought Seamoor to the event to talk about water safety and the importance of maintaining a healthy watershed to helping the steelhead population recover. âWith the summer recreation season coming up, itâs a good time to be reminding everyone about ways to stay safe when theyâre on the lake,â New Hogan park ranger Gary Basile said. Steelhead trout are listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a threatened species in the rivers of Californiaâs Central Valley.
