DIAGRAM OF THE SRC-II PROCESS. THE SRC-II PROCESS IS DESIGNED TO PRODUCE PRIMARILY A CLEAN, NON-POLLUTING LIQUID FUEL FROM HIGH SULFUR COAL. OTHER PRODUCTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE PIPELINE QUALITY SYNTHETIC GAS, LIQUEFIED PROPANE AND BUTANE GASES, NAPHTHA, SULFUR, AMMONIA, AND TAR ACID BY-PRODUCTS. THE PROCESS INVOLVES CRUSHING THE COAL AND MIXING IT WITH A SLURRY MADE BY RE- CYCLING SOME OF THE OIL FROM THE PROCESS. HYDROGEN IS ADDED, AND THE MIXTURE IS HEATED AND MOVED INTO THE DISSOLVER. HERE, UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE AND AIDED BY THE NATURAL CATALYSTS IN THE COAL, IT IS DISSOLVED. SULFUR IS REMOVED AS HYDROGEN SULFIDE. ASH AND UNDISSOLVED COAL ARE SEPARATED FROM THE LIQUID PRODUCT AND GASIFIED TO MAKE NEEDED HYDROGEN. MORGANTOWN WAS CHOSEN AS THE SITE BECAUSE OF ITS ABILITY TO ACCOMMODATE STORAGE, HANDLING, AND PROCES- SING OF COAL DURING THE THREE YEAR DEMONSTRATION PHASE AND THE LONG TERM OPERATIONS OF A MUCH LARGER COMMERCIAL PLANT.
