Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announces the selection of 31 individuals and rural business owners in North Carolina through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) which was re-authorized in the 2008 Farm Bill at Metrolina Greenhouses in Huntersville, NC on Monday, June 25, 2012. The selected agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy consumption and cost, use renewable energy technologies in their operation, or conduct feasibility studies for renewable energy projects. The Metrolina greenhouses operation has drastically cut its energy bills by replacing a natural gas heating system with a wood boiler, funded in part with USDA REAP. The wood chips used to fuel the boiler also provide an additional market for local lumber mills and logging operations. Metrolina produced 187 billion BTUs from the biomass boilers between October 1, 2011 and May 30, 2012. USDA photo by Robin Hampton.
